The town of Strong was originally known as Victoria. It was an important shipping point of local farm products until the Great Depression, which hit the farming, cotton, and lumber industries hard. However, Strong is now a flourishing community, boasting over sixty businesses and organizations. 

In 2004, the Strong school system consolidated with nearby Huttig District. Students in grades K–12 now receive their education from the Strong-Huttig School District, which consists of Strong-Huttig High School and Gardner-Strong Elementary School. Both schools are located in Strong. 

Anglers enjoy lots of opportunities to fish in Union County. There are more than 34 lakes and reservoirs located within its limits. Grand Marais Lake is found approximately 12 miles from Strong. The campgrounds at Grand Marais Lake offer 50 RV and tent campsites with electrical hookups. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery as well as a 5-lane boat ramp, restrooms with 2 shower facilities, multiple picnic areas, and two boat docks. In the southeastern part of Union County, outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy visiting Lake Jack Lee, part of the Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge. Many species of waterfowl as well as marsh and water birds make their home in the Refuge in the wetland lowland areas and the pine and hardwood forest areas. Lake Jack Lee is located where the Saline and Ouachita Rivers come together.
